We usually answer that both are very beneficial. Though yoga and Pilates are complementary practices that enhance each other, there are significant differences between them:
- Yoga and Pilates are both mind-body practices. Yoga adds the element of spirituality to the mix.
- Yoga classes are flexible and change in routine. Pilates classes are more structured and allow clients to know what to expect.
- Yoga classes focus on balanced strength and flexibility throughout the body. Pilates is focused on aligning the spine and strengthening the core.
- Breath is an integral branch of the yoga that allows practitioners to spend years exploring their practice of pranayama (the yoga of breath). Pilates breath is focused on inhaling through the nose and exhaling through the mouth.
- Yoga allows participants to release stress, increase flexibility, and become more patient with themselves through non-competition. Pilates can be tailored to individual needs and can build the core strength to assist practitioners in day-to-day functioning and improve posture.
Our recommendation is a practice that includes both Pilates and yoga to increase your fitness level, flexibility, and optimal body conditioning. Pilates and yoga are for everyone and can be adapted for anyone from beginner to the athlete.
